polka hontas

for a family allegedly descended from that loveable loser captain john - the smith family seems to have a fair amount of difficulty getting together to celebrate thanksgiving. this year was no exception. mom came down with the flu at the last possible moment so the thanksgiving day celebration in the retirement capital of tennessee was put on indefinite hold. so my sister called and implored me to drive up to asheville, nc. and so i did. but i wasn't happy about it. because driving any distance over the thanksgiving holiday...well, let's just say there's not a whole lot to be thankful for in that whole process. but it gave me ample opportunity to listen to some mixes i'd been working on and wow - can i just say i'm thankful for cd mixes. and for micah recommending that avett brothers album to me because i seriously can't stop listening to it.

anyway, i arrived in asheville on wednesday afternoon - did some lite last minute grocery shopping and christal and i set about preparing the meal. i'm not really renowned for my skills in and around the kitchen (unless of course we're talking about pasta - because nobody can cook up a batch of pasta like yours truly) so i was relegated to mincing herbs and dicing vegetables which i did in a very bad ass fashion. and my efforts must have surely been passable because by mid-morning i was upgraded to making the glaze for the turkey. the glaze - in case you were wondering - consisted of bourbon, molasses, and apricots. naturally i was pretty keen on the bourbon. i even helped myself to a few pulls on the old bottle along the way (the holiday season can be so tough).

we got all the kids to the table around four and after dimitri sang the thanksgiving prayer we began our feast. and i must say it was delightful. christal's mashed potatoes were fantastic. she insisted that the extra dash of starchy goodness was due to the hidden layers of gouda. (try the cheese it's gouda). afterward there was pumpkin cheesecake and then much digesting.

i must say that in spite of the fact that we were missing 65% of the family we managed to have a successful thanksgiving nonetheless. i taught eve the appropriate use of the rejoinder face! and she taught me that the secret to true love is in fact similar hair colour. it's true. clearly i've been overthinking this whole thing! eden destroyed my digital camera - sadly, there was a picture on that camera - a picture i was particularly fond of that i fear may be lost. forever. so for those of you who haven't yet purchased an i-pod for yours truly i would like to add new camera to my christmas list. thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity. i certainly don't deserve any of it.

I think I know of which picture you speak. I can try to re-create it for you, as long as you send it along to Nick, who for some reason does not believe the good stuff is all in the trunk, so to speak.
