Fashion and Irony Unite!

This summer I've been seeing this bag all around town:

Initial thought: I sure do love the clothes and shoes that Marc Jacobs puts out, but what a total jackass. Bleh. That's completely absurd.

Second thought: It must be a joke. This stupid canvas tote has got to be some sort of commentary on the impulse for designers to plaster their names and initials all over everything. I really began to hope with all my heart that it's an ironic statement because if so, that's kinda funny.

After some extremely brief research, it turns out that it is indeed meant to be ironic. However, I suspect that various of the young ladies I've seen shouldering these bags aren't entirely in on the joke. Maybe they are and I'm a total snob, but when I see one girl with her canvas Marc Jacob tote over her shoulder and a brown and gold Louis Vuitton hooked on her other arm, I must assume that she doesn't really get it. I kind of want one.

I am so relieved that someone expressed my exact thoughts on these bags. It is pretty hilarious to watch all the wannabe fashionistas who can probably only afford this item at Marc Jacobs parading it around as if they finally have a piece of the rock! Irony is a style to them - wearing legwarmers and cowboy boots in the summer.
